Troy Elementary School

Troy School is our second oldest building, originally constructed in 1895.  An addition was built in the 1950’s that, created an unusual layout with a series of ramps and stairs. This has made handicap accessibility a problem, and the main entrance cannot support a secure vestibule. The school has great value in its historic and cultural connection to the town but has significant needs.

Key Problems to Solve:

  • The current main entrance is located on the back of the building and not immediately recognizable. The main office is adjacent to the entrance door but there is not a secure vestibule
  • Handicap accessibility is a major problem. The main entrance is not accessible. There is a stair lift connecting much of the existing building but is not efficient and does not meet current code
  • The exit stairs do not meet current egress requirements
  • The boilers are located on the interior of the building with no exterior access
  • Student toilet rooms are only on the lowest level (basement)
  • The mechanical and electrical systems are in poor condition
  • The kitchen is too small for the student population.  Access to the exterior for food service delivery is through adjacent rooms

Proposed Solutions:

  • A new elevator and stair tower will be built to connect all levels for handicap accessibility and improved fire safety. This will also have toilet rooms on every level
  • The existing one-story wing that contains the main office will be demolished to make room for a two-story addition. This will have a new secure main entrance with a new administrative office to oversee it. This will also have a new nurses office and classrooms
  • The existing gymnasium will have the exterior walls insulated
  • The boiler room will be moved to the area below the stage with the educational spaces moved to the new addition
  • The original 1895 structure will be completely renovated.  The historical value of Troy School’s original wing is a significant factor in the State of New Hampshire’s evaluation process for our entire project.  The state awards more funding to the overall project if we opt to renovate a building of significant historical value

  • More storage space throughout the building means a cleaner and more open learning environment
  • A more clear and accessible front entrance with visitor parking and secure vestibule means less disruption throughout the day
